Views:
The School of Surveying and Geo-informatics evolved from the Teaching and Research Section of Engineering Surveying and Cartography founded in 2004. It was upgraded to a secondary college in 2024 following the institutional reform of Henan Vocational College of Water Conservancy and Environment. The School has always adhered to the Party's overall leadership, focused on the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, proactively aligned itself with national strategies such as the "Digital China" and "Smart Cities" initiatives, and constructed a three-dimensional integrated talent cultivation system distinguished by "Theory – Practice – Innovation". It is committed to nurturing high-quality and highly skilled talents with a strong sense of national belonging, solid professional foundations, outstanding practical abilities, and a spirit of innovation.
I. Major Layout: Aligning Precisely with Industrial Demands to Build a Distinctive Major Group
Focusing on the digital and intelligent transformation trend of the surveying and geographic information industry, the School has built a distinctive major group—the Surveying and Geo-informatics Technology Major Group, which covers engineering surveying, geographic information, remote sensing technology, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) application, and other fields. At present, it offers five majors, namely Engineering Surveying Technology, Surveying and Geo-informatics Technology, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Technology, Surveying Engineering Technology, and UAV Application Technology. Among them, Engineering Surveying Technology is a pilot major for the third batch of the modern apprenticeship system of the Ministry of Education, as well as a key major at the national and provincial levels. The School has over 1,900 full-time enrolled students.
Rooted in the integration of industry and education for talent cultivation, the School has constructed a school-enterprise dual-subject collaborative education mechanism, and conducted in-depth cooperation with industry-leading enterprises inside and outside the province. Through models such as co-constructing practical training bases, jointly developing curricula, jointly conducting scientific research projects, and forming joint teaching teams, the School has realized the precise alignment of the professional chain with the industry chain, curriculum content with vocational standards, and teaching processes with production processes. This effectively supports the School in achieving its talent cultivation goal of enabling students to secure employment upon graduation and be job-ready immediately upon taking up posts.
II. Faculty Team: Empowered by Dual-qualified Teachers with a Well-structured Echelon
The School regards faculty development as a core engine for its growth, and strives to build a high-quality, professional and innovative team of dual-qualified teachers. It currently has 36 faculty members, among whom 24 hold a postgraduate degree or higher and 12 are professors or associate professors, forming a teaching and scientific research echelon characterized by a high academic level, a rational professional title structure, and profound academic literacy.
In the team, 19 faculty members have been awarded honorary titles at the provincial level, including Henan Provincial Vocational Education Teaching Expert, Academic and Technical Leader of the Education Department of Education of Henan Province, Henan Provincial Excellent Education Management Talent, Provincial Master Teacher and Key Teacher of Vocational Colleges in Henan Province, and Master Teacher of Ideological and Political Teaching of Vocational Colleges in Henan Province. Moreover, 24 provincial-level "dual-qualified" teachers boast profound theoretical foundations and rich practical experience in frontline engineering. The School also engages technical backbones from relevant industries and enterprises as part-time tutors, and constructs a "dual-tutor" education system, which provides a robust talent guarantee for high-quality teaching, scientific research innovation, and social services.
III. Teaching Conditions: Integration of Virtual and Physical Resources with Strong Guarantees
Relying on the Henan Provincial Demonstration Virtual Simulation Training Base for Vocational Education — the Intelligent Surveying Demonstration Virtual Simulation Training Base, the School has systematically constructed three major training areas: "Basic Surveying – Intelligent Surveying – UAV Application". It covers more than 30 functionally complementary training rooms, including topographic survey simulation sand tables, precision measurement, UAV flight training, and digital twin and metaverse, featuring a scientific layout and orderly connection. In terms of hardware configuration, the School has built an advanced equipment system covering "air-space-ground integration" data collection and processing, equipped with core equipment such as total stations, GNSS, UAVs, and measurement robots, as well as innovative tools including metaverse devices and 3D printers. It fully aligns with the real needs of the industry, realizing the goal of "what is learned in class is what is used on the job".
The School has co-established off-campus training bases with more than 40 industry benchmark enterprises, such as China Railway Shanghai Design Institute Group Corporation Limited, and Guangzhou South Surveying & Mapping Technology Co., Ltd., building a progressive practice platform of "cognitive internship – project training – on-the-job internship". In addition, responding to the development trend of the low-altitude economy, it has set up a training base for civil UAV pilot licenses, providing solid guarantees for students' practical training and teachers' professional capability improvement.
IV. Teaching & Scientific Research Achievements: Empowered by Platforms, Yielding Fruitful Outcomes
Relying on multiple provincial-level teaching & scientific research platforms, including two sites of the Henan Provincial Engineering Research Center, the Henan Provincial Demonstrative Virtual Simulation Training Base for Vocational Education, and the Henan Provincial Inheritance and Innovation Platform for Craftsmanship & Technical Skills of Vocational College Teachers, the School has formed a positive cycle of "teaching boosting scientific research, while scientific research feeding back teaching".
In recent years, the faculty team has compiled and participated in the compilation of more than 30 textbooks, and presided over or participated in over 20 provincial and department-level research projects. The School has won one second prize of national teaching achievements, one first prize and two second prizes of provincial teaching achievements. It has published more than 50 academic papers and obtained over 20 national invention patents and utility model patents. The School has actively rendered social services, completing more than 10 technical service projects concerning enterprise technological tackling and project promotion, providing strong technical support for the development of the regional surveying and geographic information industry.
V. Talent Cultivation Outcomes: Enhancing Skills Through Competitions, Favorable Employment Prospects
Adhering to the educational philosophy of "forging dreams with craftsmanship, winning the future with skills", the School deeply integrates the approach of "promoting teaching and learning through competitions" into its talent cultivation system. It regularly organizes teachers and students to participate in various skill competitions at all levels. In recent years, its teachers and students have achieved outstanding results in high-level competitions such as the World Vocational College Skills Competition, the National Vocational College Skills Competition, and the National Skills Competition for Water Conservancy Vocational Colleges, winning nearly 100 awards in total, which demonstrates their excellent professional literacy and innovation capabilities.
Over the years, the School has cultivated and delivered numerous high-caliber technical and skilled talents to the surveying, water conservancy, environmental protection and other industries. The employment rate of graduates has remained above 95% for consecutive years. Graduates are widely employed in key industrial enterprises in Henan Province and across the country, and are highly favored by employers for their solid professional capabilities and excellent professional qualities, making solid contributions to the implementation of national strategies and the development of regional economy.
